Waitohu Stream

The Waitohu Stream is included as part of the Otaki Floodplain Management Plan. This plan was endorsed by Council in 1998, and for more information you can download the Otaki Floodplain Management Plan itself.

Waitohu Flood Risk Management Plan

Areas around Convent and Bennetts Roads are impacted by flooding from moderate flood events, typically occurring every year or so. In 2006, this frequent flooding was identified by residents as one of the critical problems in the area. We are working with Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki, other stakeholders and the community to investigate the flooding issue further and identify the best way forward.

Cutting the Stream Mouth

The Waitohu Stream mouth moves naturally and this can cause dune-erosion and upstream flooding.  At times, the mouth of the stream is 'cut' mechanically to mitigate flood risks.
